CONFERENCES AND DIDACTICS
Resident Conference is a weekly conference that takes place during protected time on Friday afternoons. This conference is organized to supplement knowledge obtained on clinical rotations. This conference features lectures from the Faculty within our department as well as from collaborating departments to support the objectives of the Council on Resident Education in Obstetrics & Gynecology (CREOG). Residents have protected time away from their clinical duties to attend this weekly conference series.
Simulation Labs take place throughout the year during resident conference time. Residents will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of simulation experiences including OB emergencies, surgical simulation, and office-based procedures. We have a state of the art simulation training center that includes obstetric mannequins, hysteroscopic simulators, and laparoscopic trainers. In addition we do provide opportunities for multi-disciplinary training within the L&D unit at Touro as well as the ED/OR's at UMC.
Clinical Reasoning Conference (occurring monthly) is a collaborative learning space for residents to develop the core skills needed for success on the oral board examination. Using a case list review, residents are asked to articulate patient care decisions using an evidence-based approach. This coaching/teaching opportunity allows residents to connect the dots between clinical knowledge and patient care. The Clinical Reasoning Conference is attended by the entire Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, including residents on rotation in Lafayette who participate via teleconference.
Patient Safety Conference (occurring monthly) is a multidisciplinary review of patient centered care which aims to identify system-based quality improvement/safety issues occurring in our clinical learning environments. This discussion creates a culture of patient safety. Each month, a chief resident presents an interesting care to stimulate academic discussions as it relates to outcomes, improvements, and best practices. The case is followed by a brief summary of a pertinent medical topic. The conference supports ACCGME competencies of systems-based practice and communication. Patient Safety Conference is attended by the entire Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, including residents on rotation in Lafayette who participate via teleconference.
Journal Club is a resident led activity, supervised by a faculty mentor, held quarterly during the academic year. The content of journal club follows a yearly curriculum, ensuring that all residents are exposed to all topics. A current or landmark article in obstetrics/gynecology is chosen, and residents are required to read and answer questions based on the article and curriculum topic. Faculty members also contribute to the discussion. This event takes place off campus to provide some social time for the department.
Pre-op Conference is held weekly and is attended by our surgical faculty and the UMCNO GYN team. All upcoming OR cases are presented by the PGY3 on service. Faculty and residents then discuss aspects of pre-operative and post-operative management as well as operative details of each case. The patients are seen in clinic following the conference to ensure continuity of care; patient planning is followed through based on conference discussions.
Tumor Board is a weekly conference that is attended by the residents and faculty on the gynecologic oncology service at University Medical Center along with Pathology, Radiology, Rad Onc, and Oncology faculty. This multidisciplinary discussion allows for a review of selected pathological specimens from recent procedures performed in the operating room and clinic. The teams then discuss individual cases and treatment plans.

This is a multidisciplinary conference that facilitates discussion among Maternal Fetal Medicine, Neonatology, Peds subspecialties, and hospital admin to review high risk cases based on fetal indications and prepare for these complex deliveries at Touro.
