Interventional Radiology Residency Program

*As of 2020, the LSUHSC-New Orleans Interventional Radiology Integrated Residency is providing Residency Essentials to its residents in IR.  This resource developed by the Society of Interventional Radiology and Association of Program Directors in Interventional Radiology is a two-year, self-paced online training and education program for residents that delivers uniform, high-quality education covering the breadth of IR in one curriculum.  As a participant in the development of this educational tool, we are happy to provide this excellent curriculum to our trainees that complements our procedure room, didactic, and bedside teaching.

SIR Residency Essentials

In addition to Residency Essentials, the Interventional Radiology/Diagnostic Radiology Residency Curriculum is organized by Lecture Topic:

The PGY 5-6 IR/DR Curriculum is structured to provide comprehensive education on all facets of IR including safety, clinical evaluation, treatment, follow-up care, practice standards, and maintenance of certification.    The curriculum lasts two years and is organized into five sections: Fundamentals of Image-Guided Interventions, Clinical Care in Interventional Radiology, Vascular Imaging and Diagnosis, Vascular Procedures, and Non-Vascular Interventions.  Each part of these subjects will be presented by an assigned faculty member who will lead a discussion of relevant topics.  1 part will be covered in 1-2 weeks depending upon the topic length and resident rotation (if there is an IR resident on IR service).  Reading assignments will be given prior to each lecture, including chapters from Image-Guided Interventions, 2nd Edition (Mauro) (listed in parentheses), Interventional Radiology Procedures in Biopsy and Drainage, Techniques in IR Series (Gervais) (listed in parentheses, designated as IR Bx&D, with chapter) as well as supplemental material from the presenter.  Lectures will be held twice weekly in 1-hour blocks on Tuesdays and Thursdays in the afternoon with the attending assigned to IR Clinic.  Residents are excused from clinical duty at these times and are expected to attend.  70% of overall attendance (including vacation) is mandatory for promotion.
