Hematology-Oncology
This team cares for most of the patients admitted to the Hematology/Oncology unit.
Subspecialty (Renal and GI)
All second-year residents rotate on the Renal and GI services as required subspecialty
rotations during two separate blocks. During each rotation, residents take care of
patients both on the inpatient side (admissions and consults) as well as in the outpatient
clinic. Residents also have the opportunity to attend and assist with procedures.
These teams consist only of upper level residents, medical students and fellows.
Residents follow a schedule similar to the inpatient rotations.
NICU
Second year residents rotate in the NICU at Touro Infirmary, one of our partner hospitals.
Touro has over 3,000 deliveries per year and houses a Level 3 NICU. There are 1-2
residents scheduled per block to rotate. Residents alternate long and short days,
which are divided evenly with one upper level checking out to the neonatal nurse practitioner
on call at 630 pm. Team members also alternate weekends off. All residents have at
least 4 days off per block. In order to promote physician wellness, these days are
always on weekends.
PICU
The PICU team consists of 4 residents with the addition of an Emergency Medicine resident
on selected blocks. Residents care for all patients admitted to the PICU at Children's
Hospital. Residents rotating in the PICU each work one week of night shifts and take
one 28-hour call on a Saturday night over the course of one block. Residents not
working the night shift will be present on rounds for all weekdays and select weekend
days. All residents have at least 4 days off per block. In order to promote physician
wellness, these days are always on weekends with at least one weekend scheduled as
a full “Golden” weekend - a continuous Saturday and Sunday off.
Emergency Medicine
Second year residents spend one block caring for patients in the Emergency Department
at Children's Hospital. This rotation consists of nine 10-hour shifts per block.
Residents work one weekend of scheduled ER shifts and one weekend of night float while
on their ER block. An educational bootcamp is held in the beginning of each block.
IEU
For 3.25 blocks during the second year, residents can choose their rotation based
on their learning needs and IEU Track. A variety of rotations are available. Faculty
advisors, program directors or chief residents are available to offer guidance in
rotation selections.
Adolescent
Second year residents spend one block learning about Adolescent Medicine. Residents
rotate through the LSU Adolescent Clinic, New Orleans Planned Parenthood clinic, school-based
health clinics and the Calhoun Behavioral Health Unit. In addition, residents work
on 2-3 projects during the rotation.
Night Float
The night float block is split into one 2-week block and one 1-week block on Monday through Thursday nights from 6:30pm-6:30am. The team consists of at least 2 senior residents and 2 interns, who divide care of our inpatient teams. An additional third team is scheduled during the busy winter months. Second-year residents are responsible for admissions to the inpatient services and supervising/helping interns with floor call. All rotators on night float are expected to complete the night float curriculum which consists of learning modules and an interactive session with one of our pediatric hospitalists.
*Night float teams contain a mixture of LSU Peds, Med/Peds, and Peds EM residents plus 1-3 Tulane residents. Purple/Green/Gold night shift interns also rotate on these teams. Up to one Tulane upper level resident per month is part of the PICU and Children's Hospital NICU team.
