Frequently Asked Questions

What does the call schedule look like?

After your first year in internal medicine, during your PGY-2 and PGY-3 years, each resident is required to share 'call' equally. Generally, we split call with Tulane residents - LSU covers even-day calls, while Tulane covers odd-day calls, including the weekends. On off-call days (odd days), LSU residents take home call. This averages out to roughly 1 call (in-house or at home) per week. Once you've reached PGY-4 year, you are no longer incorporated into the call schedule!

How many residents per year?

We accept four residents per year through ERAS. This provides a tremendous opportunity for residents to engage with staff routinely amongst each of the rotations.

What does the didactic schedule look like?

We have didactics every Thursday afternoon from 12:30-4PM. Didactics include formal lectures, but engage participants through discussions. Residents are required to host at least 2 Grand Rounds each year and are incorporated into the other lecture series (i.e. reviewing the most up-to-date literature on common neurological disease). Our program is fortunate to have a wide variety of Neurology subspecialists within our department. Faculty and Fellows from multiple specialties participate and host lectures for residents. This offers our residents and fellows a diverse mixture of lectures to enhance their knowledge base.

What does the rotation schedule look like?

Are there any research opportunities?

Residents are required to participate in one Quality Improvement project each year, as well as regular scholarly activity. Most QI projects are presented at the LSU QI Forum and the project abstracts are published. Residents are encouraged to write case reports, assemble case series, and even design prospective research projects. Faculty support resident research through help with study design and analysis, as well as through collaborative authorship of poster presentations and publications.

Are there opportunities to attend outside conferences?

Residents are encouraged to attend at least one conference annually. Conferences serve as a great opportunity to learn about current topics, network for job opportunities, and present authored research.
