Do the LSU Residency Programs participate in the Match?

Yes, applications should be submitted through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) by November 1.

Do I have to participate in the NRMP Match to enter your program?

Yes, the only way that one can enter the LSU General Surgery program is to apply through ERAS and participate in the Match.

How many positions does your program offer?

GeneraL Surgery: Eight (8) Categorical and Four (4) Preliminary positions are offered in the first Post-Graduate Year.  Additionally, there are two (2) preliminary positions offered in the second Post-Graduate Year for residents desiring further experience before entering another surgical specialty residency. Plastic Surgery Integrated: Two (2) positions offered annually.  Vascular Surgery Integrated: Two (2) positions offered annually.

Does your program accept IMGs as residents?

Yes, both preliminary and categorical positions are offered to those IMGs who apply through the correct channels.

What are the recommended USMLE scores for Step 1 and Step 2?

The recommended score for both Step 1 and Step 2 is at least 225. 
Note: You must pass USMLE Step 3 prior to entering your third year of residency.  We suggest that you take Step 3 during or shortly after your intern year.

Would you require candidates to have clinical experience in the United States?

Yes, you should have at least 2-3 years of clinical experience in the U.S.

What type of visas does your program sponsor?

Our programs do not sponsor any visas.  The programs do approve J1 visas sponsored by ECFMG.

Does your program have a cut-off graduation year?

No, not at this time.

What does a sample rotation schedule look like?

General Surgery

Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery- Integrated

Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery- Independent

Vascular Surgery- Integrated

Vascular Surgery- Fellowship
