Residency and Fellowship Programs

Vascular Surgery Residency Program

Dear Interested Applicant,

Thank you for your interest in the Vascular Training program here at We offer a fully-accredited integrated residency and a two-year traditional fellowship with the mission of training competent, prepared vascular surgeons to take on the increasing needs of our growing population. The clinical training here at is rigorous and includes a high volume of open and endovascular cases. All required ACGME case volume numbers are met by our trairnees prior to completion of the 4th year of training as seen by the case volumes listed on the website. Even though we have a high volume clinical training program, our residents and fellows are involved in various research projects and have had a 100% oral and written board exam passing rate.

Another thing that sets us apart from other programs is our relationship with the general surgery training program. Our residents during the first 3 years gain an extensive open abdominal surgical experience on their general surgery rotation and this allows them to be well rounded surgeons upon completion of the training. Resident feedback is a big part of how we shape our curriculum and we have made changes to cater to resident need based on bi yearly feedback sessions from the residents. Our training also provides residents a unique opportunity to be exposed to academic and private practice services. This allows people to be able to gain experience in how different vascular surgical practices are run and this has allowed us to place our graduates in a variety of academic and private practice jobs.

During the first three years of the residency, rotations include trauma surgery, colorectal surgery, neurosurgery, cardiovascular surgery, general surgery, colorectal surgery, and Surgical The final two-years of residency training mirror our approach in the two-year fellowship, the 4th and 5th year residents independently lead different services with the guidance of faculty members and upon completion of these final two years our trainees are completely ready for independent practice in Vascular Surgery. All of our prior trainees have finished their training in the 90th percentile for most of the defined categories, and have successfully achieved board certification with our previous graduate obtaining the second highest board score in the country. We are also proud to host the Fundamentals of Vascular Surgery course at our institution which was the first ever established fully simulation course in the US for vascular trainees. We also host a Gulf Coast Vascular Meeting each year where we have had the pleasure and honor of hosting receiving lectures from well known vascular surgeons in the field including multiple previous chairman's of the Society of Vascular Surgery.

In summary, we believe that the training provided by LSU Vascular Surgery is one of a kind. A geographical location allows us to take care of vascular pathology rarely encountered in other parts of the country. Our combination of academic, VA, and private practice collaborations allows us to provide a well rounded complete training that provides the basis for our graduates to become successful vascular surgeons and leaders in the field.
