Residency and Fellowship Programs

Vascular Surgery Residency Program

Dear Interested Applicant,

SheahanThank you for your interest in the Vascular Surgery Training Program at LSU. We offer a fully accredited integrated residency and a two-year traditional fellowship with the mission of training competent, well-prepared vascular surgeons to meet the growing demands of our population. Clinical training at LSU is rigorous and includes a high volume of both open and endovascular cases. All required ACGME case volume numbers are met by our trainees before the completion of their fourth year, as reflected in the case volumes listed on our website. Despite the high-volume clinical exposure, our residents and fellows actively participate in research projects and have maintained a 100% pass rate on both the oral and written board exams.

One of the distinguishing features of our program is our close relationship with the General Surgery Training Program. During the first three years, our residents gain extensive open abdominal surgical experience through general surgery rotations, which helps them become well-rounded surgeons upon completion of training. Resident feedback plays a vital role in shaping our curriculum. We hold biannual feedback sessions and make curriculum adjustments based on resident needs and suggestions.

Our training also provides a unique opportunity to gain experience in both academic and private practice settings. This exposure allows our graduates to understand how different vascular surgical practices operate, which has helped them secure a wide range of positions in both academic and private sectors.

During the first three years of residency, rotations include trauma surgery, colorectal surgery, neurosurgery, cardiovascular surgery, and general surgery. The final two years of training mirror the structure of our traditional fellowship: fourth- and fifth-year residents independently lead various services under the guidance of faculty. Upon completion of these final years, our trainees are fully prepared for independent practice in vascular surgery. All of our graduates have completed training in the 90th percentile across most ACGME-defined categories, with one recent graduate earning the second-highest board score in the country.

We are proud to host the Fundamentals of Vascular Surgery course at our institution—one of the first fully simulation-based vascular training courses established in the U.S. Additionally, we host the annual Gulf Coast Vascular Meeting, where we’ve had the honor of receiving lectures from nationally recognized vascular surgeons, including several former presidents of the Society for Vascular Surgery.

In summary, we believe the training offered by LSU Vascular Surgery is truly one of a kind. Our geographical location provides exposure to vascular pathology rarely encountered

elsewhere in the country. Combined with our partnerships across academic, VA, and private practice settings, our program offers a comprehensive training experience that prepares our graduates to become successful, skilled vascular surgeons and leaders in the field.
