Scholarly Activity Overview
Scholarly activity is an important program requirement.
Our residents all have a great sense for scientific inquiry and enjoy contributing to the knowledge base of dermatology. Many of our current scholarly endeavors are listed. The department subsides the expense for resident attendance at the major national dermatology meetings and also pays expenses for residents presenting significant educational endeavors such as posters, abstracts, or lectures at national meetings. Our dermatology residents also engage in research and publications through the following required assignments:
- Frist year residents give a 30-minute talk to faculty and residents on a timely dermatology topic.
- Each resident publishes a PubMed cited article during their residency
- Residents present their “write-ups” of patients they present to the regional Louisiana Dermatologic Society for diagnostic and therapeutic discussion.
- Residents participate in the design and oversight of quality assurance and safety projects in our participating hospitals.
- Each third year resident presents a “Peterkin Project”, an original clinical or basic research project presented to the Louisiana Dermatological Society. It is a competitive event with the top project selected by society members. Our faculty are always engaged in the above activities through collaboration, mentoring, topic selection, and encouragement.
