ABOUT THE PROGRAM
At LSUHSC OUHC, our Sports Medicine Fellowship stands out by ensuring that competition remains on the field and never among our trainees. Our fellows have the unique advantage of focusing exclusively on patient care without competing with orthopedic residents, team physicians, or even their fellow trainees. While other institutions might boast high-profile athletics programs, the true value lies in the quality of experience you gain. At LSUHSC OUHC, you won't find yourself waiting behind other providers to see a patient. Instead, you will have direct, unopposed access to athletes and a diverse patient base.
Each year, we admit two fellows into our one-year, fully accredited program. We provide alternate clinical schedules to ensure that each fellow has exclusive clinical access to athletes performing at the highest levels of competition. Unlike in some fellowships, you won’t need to share game coverage with orthopedic residents. On the field and in the training room, you will handle all cases independently.
Our clinic operates within a safety net hospital, meaning you will encounter a broad and diverse patient population. This exposure includes individuals from various socioeconomic backgrounds who rely on our services for comprehensive medical care. The setting offers a unique opportunity to work with patients who have a wide range of needs, from routine to complex cases.
Throughout your fellowship, you will perform numerous physicals for college and high school athletes, gaining extensive experience in sports medicine. Our program is committed to your development. We’ll mentor you through every step of your training, helping you refine your clinical skills, expand your ultrasound skills, prepare for board exams, and participate in scholarly activity. Our rotation sites serve hundreds of patients annually, including local high school and NCAA Division I college athletes, and we also provide team physician services for a prominent regional sports team.
