WELCOME TO THE LSU NEUROSURGERY RESIDENCY PROGRAM

Welcome to the LSU Neurosurgery Residency Program at LSU Health New Orleans. Our program is dedicated to delivering exceptional neurosurgical while training the next generation of neurosurgical leaders. Under the leadership of Dr. Frank Culicchia, Chairman and Dr. John Steck, Program Director, we strive to create an environment where residents receive exceptional clinical training, strong mentorship, and the opportunity to exceed their individual career goals.
Our ACGME-accredited residency program accepts one or two residents in alternating years. Each resident’s research year is tailored to their interests, ensuring personalized development. The program’s small size allows close faculty mentorship and provides residents with exceptional clinical and educational experiences.
Training & Clinical Experience
Residents rotate through three hospitals:
- University Medical Center - the region’s only Level 1 Trauma Center
- West Jefferson Medical Center
- Manning Family Children's Hospital
These rotations provide exposure to ~2,000 major neurosurgical procedures annually, covering all areas of neurosurgery.
Education & Skill Development
Our structured educational curriculum includes:
- Grand Rounds and formal conferences
- Weekly resident presentations
- Guest lectures and visiting professors
- Hands-on training in the Microsurgical Anatomy Lab, including cadaver dissection workshops
This comprehensive blend of clinical experience, didactic learning, and research prepares residents for successful careers in both academic and clinical neurosurgery.
Wellness & Community
Resident wellness and community are core priorities of our program. We offer monthly dedicated wellness activities that foster friendships and relationships between staff and residents, while emphasizing the importance of balance in the lives of our trainees. These activities help create a supportive, collaborative environment where residents thrive both professionally and personally.
At LSU Neurosurgery, we are devoted to preparing the next generation of skilled, compassionate neurosurgeons who will continue the tradition of excellence in the field.
