IN CASE OF NEEDLE STICK/EXPOSURE INJURY
Needlestick/Exposure Protocol

If a faculty member/resident/student has a needlestick/exposure occur at Ochsner University Hospital & Clinics, they are to do the following*:
FACULTY/RESIDENTS
- Fill out the appropriate forms as required by LSUHSC New Orleans:
Faculty & Residents: DA2000 & Ochsner Needlestick Injury Workup forms
These forms can also be found in the GME Office. Can be accessed after hours.
- Report to the ED to be seen immediately. You will present the completed forms in the ED, but will need them to be returned to you.
- Completed forms must be returned to the Danielle Doucet in the GME Office or sent directly to Employee Health - Meocha Singleton at singleton@ochsner.org.
STUDENTS
- Fill out the appropriate forms as required by LSUHSC New Orleans:
Students: DA3000 & Ochsner Needlestick Injury Workup forms
These forms can also be found in the GME Office. Can be accessed after hours.
- Report to the lab for a lab draw immediately. You will present the completed forms in the lab, but will need them to be returned to you.
- Completed forms must be returned to the Danielle Doucet in the GME Office or sent directly to Employee Health - Meocha Singleton at singleton@ochsner.org.
- Within 72 hours of exposure, contact Dr. Angela McLean at the LSU Campus Health Clinic to inform her of the incident: 504-568-1798.
*If at the time of exposure it is known that the source patient has abnormal labs, the exposed faculty member/resident/student will immediately report to the ED of the campus where the exposure occurred for lab draw and prophylactic medicines. The faculty member/resident/student will then follow steps 3 and 4 above.
Residents Only:
After a claim has been initiated, the claim number will be provided directly to the resident/faculty member. The claim number can be given to the pharmacy if prescriptions are needed.
Students Only:
Students are required to carry needle stick insurance through blue cross blue shield. They are issued a needle stick insurance card in addition to their primary insurance card and are to present that card at the time of evaluation (in the ED).
The stick fee coverage has been upgraded to include a 3 day supply of prophylaxis drugs to be prescribed when a student has experienced a needle stick. The needle stick policy identification card that students receive in the mail includes information necessary to process pharmacy claims in the event of a needle stick.
Students who have Medicaid as their primary insurance must present both their needle stick card and their Medicare card to the pharmacy for ALL prescriptions.
