Psychotherapy at the LSU Baton Rouge C&A Fellowship program
Philosophy
The LSU Baton Rouge Fellowship Program is committed to training fellows how to use evidence-based treatments shown to be effective with child/adolescent and family issues. We focus on parent-child interactive therapy, parent/child psychotherapy, cognitive and cognitive behavioral therapies (including trauma focused-CBT), psychodynamic therapy (including Mentalization therapy, schema-focused psychotherapy), program treatments such as dialectical behavioral therapy, multi-systemic therapy and functional family therapy, various family therapies and group therapy.
- Our fellows work in psychotherapy clinic throughout their training.
- Specific seminars focus on particular therapies: each treatment is reviewed regarding effectiveness, implementation and outcome
- Round-robin presentations within case conference
- We focus on how to integrate pharmacotherapy with psychotherapy
Seminars
Objectives:
- To become familiar with current evidence-based mental health treatments for children and adolescents;
- To learn specific treatment modalities for use in clinical practice;
- To learn the indications and contraindications regarding the use of the various types of psychotherapy.
Seminar topics (not necessarily in the order in which they will be presented)
- Parent-Child Interactive Therapy (PCIT): 15 sessions
- Parent-Child Psychotherapy (PCP): 10 sessions
- Multi-systemic Therapy (MST): 4 sessions
- Functional Family Therapy (FFT): 4 sessions
- Family therapy and parenting: 4 sessions
- Psychodynamic therapy: 10 sessions
- Cognitive therapy: 2 sessions
- Cognitive-behavioral therapy (including treatment of specific anxiety disorders): 10 sessions
- Interpersonal therapy for Adolescents (IPT-A): 3 sessions
- Play Therapy: 2 sessions
- Therapies addressing borderline personality disorder: Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Schema-focused Therapy (SFT), Mentalization-based therapy (MBT-A): 5 sessions
- Substance Use treatment: 5 sessions
- Motivational Interviewing, relapse prevention
- ASAM levels of care (including medical necessity criteria for each)
- Trauma-focused therapy: 2 sessions
- Specific issues regarding the treatment of preschoolers, school age children and adolescents: 2 sessions
- Integration of psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy: 1 session
- Supportive psychotherapy: 1 session
- Telepsychiatry in Child Psychiatry: 1 session
