The Department of Radiology at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center (LSUHSC) in New Orleans, Louisiana offers a fully-accredited, four-year program in diagnostic radiology leading to eligibility for certification by the American Board of Radiology. The Program has been designed from the ground up to meet the new structure of the American Board of Radiology’s examinations. Our goal is to train excellent residents and to prepare them for a career in radiology.

Our primary objective is to provide a proper balance between practical experience and didactic instruction so as to train competent, clinically-oriented and academic diagnostic radiologists.  Our goal as a department is to be a center of excellence in Radiology and to create an environment where the faculty, residents, and staff provide state of the art radiologic care as well as create an environment of academic excellence. To that end, we have divided our service into 9 distinct subspecialties with academic directors and staff that have subspecialty training and are experts in each field.

The program is committed to placing our residents in a position to successfully complete both the new Core and Certifying examinations as well as participating in elective subspecialization in their senior year. Our residents rotate through the core radiology sections at least 3 times prior to the end of their 3rd year so that they have the needed practical experience before taking the Core board examination. The curriculum in each subspecialty area is intended to be covered within a two-year period, so that all residents are exposed to the entirety of the curriculum a minimum of two times during their residency.

Our department is an electronic film-less environment with PACS and voice recognition deployed throughout the enterprise. We are excited about our recent move into the new University Medical Center New Orleans (UMCNO), a brand new 446 bed acute care hospital with the regions only Level 1 trauma center.  The 2.3 million square foot hospital complex includes a Diagnostic and Treatment Center (where Radiology is housed), an Ambulatory Care Center and 3 Inpatient Towers.  The department has brand new state of the art equipment including advanced Nuclear Medicine, Magnetic Resonance and Computed Tomography systems as well as 5 new Angiography rooms.

The Department of Radiology at LSUHSC in New Orleans offers the best of a large program with access to a large volume of interesting and varied cases with the advantages of a small program with a large faculty to resident ratio and graded responsibility.
