LSUHSC-Lafayette Internal Medicine Research and Scholarly Activity Requirements
The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education and the Department of Internal Medicine require that all Internal Medicine Residents participate in research and scholarly activity projects.
This requirement is intended to enhance the Resident's understanding of clinical practice and research methodology including; design, implementation, interpretation, and presentation of results.
ACGME Requirements
(IV.D.3.a) Residents must participate in scholarship. (Core)
(IV.D.3.a)(1) A program’s graduates must demonstrate dissemination of scholarship within or external to the program by any of the following methods. (Core)

- Presenting in grand rounds;
- Poster sessions;
- Leading conference presentations (journal club, morbidity and mortality, case conferences);
- Workshops;
- Quality improvement (QI)presentations;
- Podium presentations;
- Grant leadership;
- Non-peer reviewed print/electronic resources;
- Articles or publications;
- Book chapters;
- Textbooks;
- Webinars;
- Service on professional committees;
- Serving as a journal reviewer,
- Journal editorial board member, or editor. (Core)
Department of Internal Medicine Requirements
- Abstract submissions to the annual Louisiana ACP Resident and Student Meeting.
- Case Reports/Quality Improvement (QI) Projects/Research Projects.
- Outpatient Resident Firm QI projects.
- Residents are encouraged to work within their Firm, with fellow Residents, or individually under the guidance of a Faculty Mentor / Sponsor.
- 100% participation is required for Residents.
