OB/GYN Residency in Baton Rouge

Diversity and Inclusion

As an inclusive community, we embrace the full range of human differences: race, gender, ethnicity, age, culture, national origin, religious belief, physical ability, sexual orientation, gender identity, socioeconomic class, and political convictions. We are committed to fostering growth in the matriculation of African-American, Hispanic, Vietnamese, and the LGBT community, as well as students from underserved rural regions of Louisiana. The program will draw upon its position as the primary provider of safety net OB/GYN care in the region, emphasizing the unique needs of our underserved and ethnically diverse patient population. Through implementing and developing specific medical student and residency applicant experiences centered on diversity and cultural competency, we will attract motivated trainees who are more likely to reflect the population that we serve. Residents are encouraged to self-select personal mentors who can help them navigate the challenges of residency while keeping in mind differences such as gender, race/ethnicity, age, sexual orientation, geographic background, family background, and religious background which may all affect the residents' experience in the clinical setting.

As we accept the opportunities to demonstrate leadership in our community in advancing health equity, we embrace the importance and value of continued growth of institutional diversity as an essential element of success in fulfilling this mission. To maximize faculty diversity, the program will focus on increasing its attractiveness as a place to work by creating and expanding opportunities for faculty development and leadership, including:

  1. utilizing the newly-created Director of Scientific Research to increase faculty's opportunities for publication

  2. encouraging committee membership and leadership positions at the hospital, state, regional and national levels

  3. providing opportunities for curricular development and medical education scholarship.
