Letter from the Program Director | Internal Medicine
Welcome to the Internal Medicine Residency training program at University Hospital & Clinics (UHC), Lafayette, LA, formerly called as University Medical Center (UMC).
The IM program is a community based, university affiliated training program with emphasis on clinical training of Internal Medicine.
We are an affiliate of the LSU School of Medicine in New Orleans, LA with clinical clerkship rotations for the third and fourth year medical students from the School as well as having visiting professor lecture series with the faculty from the Medical School.
The ACGME accreditation of the training program dates back to July 1972 when the old hospital was “Lafayette Charity Hospital”. UMC was later built and opened in 1982 and following a public-private partnership with Lafayette General Health (LGH) System in June 2013 it was renamed as UHC.
We at present have a total of 26 residents in the training program. Typically we have eight residents and one preliminary Intern graduating each year.
The residents have the opportunity to train at UHC with predominantly an indigent patient population but with a wide variety of pathology to learn from and at Lafayette General Medical Center (LGMC), a large private hospital and the main campus of the LGH System with a large ICU and exposure to services not available at UHC.
Residents get their training and experience in Inpatient Medicine, ICU, ER, Ambulatory Medicine/clinics and several of the subspecialties of Medicine at UHC while getting additional ICU experience at LGMC and also in Hospitalist Medicine, Neurology, Rehab Medicine, and additional elective rotations.
About forty percent of our graduates have pursued Fellowship training in several specialties over the years and the remaining are working as Hospitalists or practicing traditional practice or doing Ambulatory Medicine only.
Besides Internal Medicine UHC also hosts a Family Medicine residency and a Geriatrics Fellowship program and is also a training site for all the surgical specialties from the LSU program in New Orleans.
Lafayette, LA is Cajun Country, a HUB city with the surrounding parishes (counties) of the Acadiana region of Southern Louisiana, French descendants from the Acadia region in Nova Scotia, Canada. A colorful culture, friendly and family oriented people with great food all of which makes this area a wonderful place to live. We would like you to come and be a part of the training program at UHC in Lafayette and enjoy the “good times”.
