  1. Acting internship

This four week rotation provides senior students with the opportunity to begin functioning as interns on our inpatient St Clare unit.  Students will develop additional sills in all areas od core competence.  Particular emphasis is given to improving skills of clinical judgment and decision making by giving students more responsibility for patient care than they had in the third year.  Students are encouraged to take increasing amounts of responsibility while under the close supervision of staff and faculty. This rotation would take place on the inpatient service of Our Lady of the Lake.

  1.  Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry

This four week elective is open to one or two medical students per four week block.  Students participate in daily assessments and clinical rounds with the psychiatry consultation -liaison team at Our Lady of the Lake Hospital.  In addition, students would have the opportunity to participate in the collaborative care program—an integrated system offering psychiatric support to primary care clinical for LSU Health and the Lake Physician group

  1.  Emergency Psychiatry

This four week elective is open to one medical student per four week block.  Students would participate in the Emergency Mental and Behavioral Health unit at Our Lady of the Lake. Students would do evaluations and assist in treatment and disposition decisions.  Clinical emphasis will be on accurate assessment and triage as well as continuity of care issues after the emergency is resolved.  The schedule would involve Monday to Friday shifts of either 8-5 or 12-8PM.  At least one overnight shift would be included.

  1.  General Psychiatry

This four week elective is open to one to two medical students per four week block. Student could do a combination of consultation-liaison work, inpatient hospital work and involvement in the psychiatric emergency department, depending on their interests.  The goal is to expose students to a wide variety of treatment settings and for them to gain a better understanding of the multifaceted nature of psychiatric treatment. This four week elective is open to one to two medical students per four week block.

  1.   General Adult Psychiatry Inpatient

During this one month rotation, the student will be actively involved in an inpatient psychiatry ward at OLOL as a member of the treatment team.  The student would be expected to carry a small caseload from admission to discharge, working with  the primary treating physician (under supervision) and performing such duties as psychiatric assessments, diagnostic formulations, participating in family sessions, choosing medications and developing treatment plans, all with a careful bent towards the educational value of the cases. There are 2 units where this elective is available ( St Clare, mostly mood disorders; 1 North, mostly psychotic disorders). Students can choose a combo of both units, or all time spent on one unit.

  1.  Psychiatric research

This four week course allows the student to join an existing research team in order to become better acquainted with the clinical research methodology and practice.  Course content caries with the interest of the students and the availability of relevant research.  Involvement in teaching modules related to the practice of research will be a part of the rotation as well as education in critically reading the literature.

  1.  Suicide specific care

This four week course allows the student to learn about the evidence base for suicide specific care and participate in the model practiced at Our Lady of the Lake (CAMS-- the Collaborative Assessment and Management of Suicidality).  Students will help in the assessment and initial treatment of people with suicidal thoughts in conjunction with psychology graduate students throughout the Our Lake of the Lake system of care.

  1.  Child and adolescent psychiatry (LSU medical students only)

This four week course is open to one medical student per four week block.  Students will have the opportunity to focus on inpatient, outpatient or consultation liaison clinical activity during the block.
